The people who keep
Tryon's story alive.
Every exhibit, every lecture, every visitor who leaves knowing something they didn't before — that's your work too.
Ways to Get Involved
Our docents are the heart of the museum experience. Working Wednesday through Saturday in three-hour shifts, docents welcome visitors, guide them through exhibits, and share the stories that bring Tryon’s history to life. We ask for a commitment of two shifts per month — enough to stay connected without overwhelming your schedule. Training provided.
Do you love digging into old records, photographs, and documents? Our exhibits and archiving volunteers assist with cataloguing artifacts, supporting exhibit development, and helping expand the museum’s historical record. Ideal for detail-oriented volunteers with an interest in local history, genealogy, or archival work.
If you’re organized, communicative, and energized by helping others find their place, this role keeps the museum running smoothly. You’ll help schedule docent shifts, coordinate event volunteers, and serve as a friendly first point of contact for new volunteers joining the team.
The museum gift shop is a meaningful part of the visitor experience — and revenue from it directly supports our programs. Gift shop volunteers assist visitors with purchases, maintain displays, and help keep inventory organized. A good fit for someone who enjoys conversation and takes pride in the details.
From the Tales of Tryon lecture series to fundraising events and community gatherings, our events volunteers make it all run smoothly. You’ll help with setup, guest welcome, and day-of logistics — and you’ll represent the museum at Tryon functions like 4th Fridays, where your presence reminds the community that history is alive and well on Maple Street.
Not sure where you fit yet? That’s a good sign — it means you’re curious. Tell us a little about yourself in the form below, and we’ll help you find a role that matches your interests, schedule, and skills.
